Submission of foreign source documents
Were you born abroad or have you lived abroad? Then there is a good chance that there are documents of official events in that country. Official events include: birth, marriage, divorce, death, name changes, recognition, adoption or acquiring another nationality. The document says something about your marital status.
Official documents or deeds from abroad are proof that an official event took place there. We call these source documents. Events from abroad must also be registered in the Netherlands. This data is processed by the municipality in the Personal Records Database (BRP).
Sometimes you must have documents legalized first. You can read more about this on the government website(Verwijst naar een externe website).
Are the documents not drawn up in Dutch, English, German or French? Then a translation by a sworn translator in the Netherlands is also required.
If you are registered in the Netherlands with only a passport, you must also (still) submit your birth certificate to the municipality. Other foreign documents are necessary before you can enter into a marriage or registered partnership in the Netherlands. It sometimes takes a lot of time to get the right document(s) to the Netherlands.
Do you currently live in Dijk en Waard? The municipality may then ask you to submit certain source documents. You must personally come to the counter in the town hall in Heerhugowaard. You can make an appointment for the submission of foreign source documents with the button at the bottom of this page.
The municipality examines the documents for authenticity. We can therefore inform you which documents are required and which conditions these documents must meet.
